You and me turns thirty

Both thumbs up for the choice of sample, for the edit and for reminding me Round Trip's version which I like a teeny-tiny bit better than the original. And for bringing it back 30 years later.

Pabzzz soundcloud page is like the perfect Christmas and New Year's gift, so you better find the time to check it out and kick off this new year ahead of us with atmospheric jazzy hip-hop sounds that kick ass.

Have a great time y'all. And groove it up a notch.  :-)

Stroke from the past

Hello everyone! Just got back from 1998 where I accidentally fell a few minutes ago when I pressed play to this track, while I was scanning through some files in my hard drive.

Although it was never my favorite and I haven't heard it in at least 12-13 years, oh-my-god, what a nice surpirse that was! You can tell how excited I got from all the exclamation marks I used in this post!

Melba reworked

69-year-old Melba must be feelin' quite thrilled and enthusiastic that in ending 2014, beginning 2015, young people still get inspired by her '70s-'80s songs and experiment on them, bringing them back to our ears and soul. This is one of the latest edits that I came accross by Moscow's Rare Cuts.

Love's comin' at ya, from the forgotten 1982, right back at ya, reworked and refreshed!

Thank you Melba for the great legacy of your music and your voice, thank you Paul Lawrence Jones III for writing this song and thank you Rare Cuts for bringing it back to my speakers.

Young boy in a world without love, can you see where you're going?

There have been quite a few upsetting things goin' on in Greece the past month, provin' once more –not that there was ever any doubt- that the government and the state is as rotten as hell would be if it actually existed and that most citizens of this country -and other countries as well for that matter- are so ignorant and indifferent, it hurts.

Having said that, this post today ain’t about sharing music. It’s about sharing the very profound will of mine that someday we will all be able to search for our inner selves, leave the superficial, vain and materialistic part of us behind, unite and truly love each other, so that we finally understand that we need no fancy stuff, we need nobody to rule us, nobody to make decisions for us and nobody to say what’s right and what’s wrong.

Cause everything could only be right then. And people wouldn’t have to go on hunger strikes, facing death, to claim human rights.

Stretch your mind and unite, people. There’s your power.
It ain’t cool to be an outsider in this.

Find peace

I bet all my delivery flyers (you do know how important delivery flyers are, don't you?) that the Bamboos and Funk'n'Stein definitely had this in mind when they started makin' music.

Absolute funk from the late '70s and Experience Unlimited. One of those pieces of music that its lyrics make you think, but its melody gives you peace, even when the rest of the world has totally lost it. And I won't even begin talking about the vocals by Melva "Lady" Adams and Donald R. Fields.

Peace.

How do you say awesome in Spanish?

Mr. Santiago Ferreira (or Santi), born in Paraguay, based in the U.S., released his first full length album Ciclico about three months ago. And although I must admit that most of it may be too latino-tango-ish for my kinda taste, this track is funky as hell.

I don't know any Spanish, but I know this tune is a toda madre -and I hope I didn't just say anything for anyone's mother. Maybe fantástico. Just to be safe.

Who wants cookies'n'cream?

A few minutes ago, I was logging into my soundcloud account and bam! It almost felt like this gem EP was sitting there waitin' for me.

Well, Ed Wizard & Disco Double Dee ain't no news for this blog, so I was well prepared when I saw the name. Good work, nice tunes, perfect beat, great samples (I caught Trussel - I love it somewhere in there), and I already have 2 favorites (Boogie Box sampling Khemistry - I got a feeling and Givin' Ya Up). Can't ask for more. This just made my day, the last 10 minutes before it would end...

The Breakbot experience

Since I managed to survive the previous stroke and attend yesterday's party without a heart attack, I might as well tell you a few things about my Breakbot experience.

I 'll be honest: there have been Breakbot sets that have absolutely blown my mind in their full duration, track by track. Yesterday, in The Kids are Alright party, I can say that I got the chills with 3-4 tracks that have never heard before, had minor strokes with 1 or 2 awesome unknown tunes (and the fact that they still remain unknown doesn't help my condition), danced a lot, came face to face with Breakbot -and without realizing it I think I froze and goggled-, but in the end I didn't totally get that "mind blowing" feeling.

I think it's because Breakbot's set was just 1 hour and a half -or a bit longer- and during that time he had to warm up, harsh it up, disco it down, bring back the old skool, play a few hits and close down. Too many things to do, too little time. But to tell you the truth, I don't care. Mind-blowing or not, I had a great time. Breakbot can do that to you, even with the worst one of his sets. And this man's talent of incorporating producing skills into a dj set is just beyond me.

Highlights: The I'm glad that you're here track, Breakbot's intro track (see video below), Michael Jackson's Thriller track with people from the crowd dancing on stage -they should have danced like zombies though, that would be fun- and the whole nostalgic '90s part of the set with Snap, Robin S and stuff.

(ok this actually was more than mind-blowing, I admit it)

(This is the Thriller track I mentioned, but that's it, sorry. No more videos. I prefer spending the night dancing than recording...)

After Breakbot, Busy P took over. He started off well with a really dirty edit on Imagination's Illusion and a bit of disco mood, but then things got too harsh for my ears, so I didn't stick around much longer. After all, I'm like 100 and if the music can't speak to me, I get tired and hungry.

Trading autumn

Autumn is making its way strongly into our lives the past days, nights are back to chill mode, everything is starting to shrink into cozy situations and the free spirit of summer is about to find a place to rest for a while. Well... not just yet!

Fresh EP from Kiu D with this killer tune, along with two tracks inspired by Teena Marie's "I need your lovin" and a "Summer" track.

I'd like to take autumn back after this. Or trade it with one last summer weekend.

Fairy tune

In coherence with the previous post's tune, this one comes from Thrupence who probably is related to Edward Vanzet -I'm no Poirot, but Jack Vanzet and Edward Vanzet, both from Melbourne, has to mean something.

So lovin' the fairy tale '30s or '40s intro, the sample, the beat, the atmosphere, the vocals, everything about it. The whole album Lessons is about to be released on September 26th, so watch for it. And have a great week full of fine tunes. :-)

September Sunday night in notes

If I had to pick a tune that reflects how a September Sunday night feels like, I probably couldn't think of anything closer to this mood than this piece of awesomeness.

Bitter, sweet, melancholic, cuddling, emotional, slothful, cool. All these mixed together and put to notes from the other hemisphere once again, by this talented dude, Edward Vanzet, who is about to release his first album titled "Lichen".

Have I ever told you how much I love Australian producers? I bet I have.

Coco disco

It's that time of year again when I'm bored of all my old car cds, mp3 files, records and tunes and I'm desperately seeking for something fresh to get me going again. And guess what.

Found it!
Fresh EP from Alien Disco Sugar, a producer that's definitely growin' into my favorite ones, making good use of the disco sound with a little bit of tickle at Deodato's "Keep on movin'" and Gayle Adams' "Love fever", followed by the coconut feeling of Coco and the inspiration of Good Old Love.

Thumbs up. Both of them.

Beach, please!

If you asked me two days ago, I'd say this is the worst summer ever. But when all go wrong, something has to be right, right? Right. So with the so fully anticipated vacation on the way, vacation which I came very close to missing completely this year, I finally feel it's time to just let everything be and head to a fine beach, with good company and the best music I can gather up in a very short time. And this is the beat I wanna follow in this year's summer vacation.

So long! See you in a couple of weeks, mates. Have a great time y'all!

Il lupo rocks

Sometimes I can't even believe my (clogged) ears when it comes to '70s music.

First heard of it by Psychemagik (check out post here). As you can see it wasn't possible that this piece of utter inspiration wouldn't find its way into this blog and have a special presentation.

Put together by Italian musicians Ivano Fossati and Oscar Prudente in 1973, this tune couldn't but be discovered 40 years later by young producers and be served to all the passionate listeners out there.

To pray or not to pray

Just wondering... Is praying any effective for those who practice it and the other people around them? I mean, would praying do any good to, I don't know, all these lost souls by two plane crashes in two weeks time? Would it prevent the bombing in Gaza? Would it save all those kids, mothers and fathers? Would it make us all brothers and sisters? Would it make money something no one would care for? If it would, let me know. I'll start prayin' too. Till then, I'll leave it to Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes.

Disco with a twist

Don't know about your summer, but mine ain't lookin' good so far. There are a few things, however, that keep me in high spirits when all point to the opposite direction. One of these is -take a wild guess- music. This compilation handpicked by Funk Hunk, ready to be released on July the 25th by Handshakes Records, easily managed to make me forget about shit going on, smile and start some finger snapping and shoulder moving when all else seriously failed.

I can't even begin to point out how many tracks in this compilation made me stop for a minute and enjoy. Really enjoy. (the Dopeshoes edit, oh-my-god).

Thank you Funk Hunk for putting this whole thing together and spreading the word. Thumbs up till they hurt!

Miracle music

I don't believe in miracles. I believe in good, inspiring and forever lasting music sounding like a miracle.

This is the original version of "I believe in miracles" by the Jackson Sisters, which was co-written by Mark Capanni. He was the first to perform it in 1973 and a year later the Jackson Sisters sent it to the moon and back, something he didn't manage to do - this version however is awesome as well. Different kind of awesome, but still awesome.

Here's how Ramsey Hercules was inspired by Mark Capanni's tune which became widely known by the Jackson Sisters.

King and Queen of the Caribbean

In 1984 a Caribbean Queen was born and spread around the music world with the soothing voice of Billy Ocean. As a huge fan of Billy Ocean from a very early age when my older sister would buy all those "top hits" records of the '80s, this track was always among my young-age favorites.

I caught this tune the other day at a bar -a rather boring one, full of middle-aged, dull people, but with surprisingly enough good disco music that made me wonder if I'm that old as well and haven't realized it yet. It wasn't the original version, but a really skillful edit which I couldn't seem to find today, as I was searching for it. However, I caught this fine tune instead -offered with a free download-, which made up for my time of dead-end searching.

Really enjoyed the editing work of Tesla Boy here, although I must admit I'm missing the sax part of the song -I'd like a little bit more of it.

For those who ain't got no clue what we're talking about here, this is the original version of "Caribbean Queen" and this is Melba Moore's answer. If you've loved either of these two during the '80s, then I'm sorry I reminded you how old you are today :-) N'joy!

Heartbeat time

This ain't a new discovery. It's one of those low-profile tracks back in the ending '90s-beginning '00s that didn't make a lotta noise, but stood among my top house tunes all these years.

Inspired by a group of dudes in Nottingham, Schmoov!, who wanted to combine house music with their former experience as a funk live band, this is one of those tracks that I've never heard through the speakers of a bar or a night club, but can still grab me and take me back to the time when house music was what it was supposed to be: a heartbeat.

Funk yeah!

In 1975, this is what was happening on "The other side of the moon".

Funky bass, groovy beats, playful guitar, all pointing the rhythm to an atmospheric, jazzy piano tune that could make you press "repeat" an infinite amount of times, enough to make you start wondering about your sanity.

This very tune was a hit sample for rap and hip hop later on, givin' Chubb Rock something to work upon in the '90s (maybe this will help), as well as the Boogie Down Productions (this will certainly help) and Jermaine Dupri (there's no way this won't help).

The original version, however, comes from the Miracles back in 1974 with Billy Griffin in the leading vocals (listen here). Also amazing, but it's missing one important thing: the piano.

All these raise once again one very crucial question: how bad do the '70s rule, man?

Play it again, Sam

I've always loved the Steely Dan "Do it again" tune and can't say I've ever caught a nice edit on it that could make me goggle with enthusiasm. Till now.

Smooth and creative with the vocals in the right place, this edit by SLMDNK feels so right you wanna play it again. And again. And again.

*Be sure to check out SLMDNK's music here and press the free download button to "Do it again" or whichever tune you love. Also, check him out in a previous post in this blog here

Just one step

Ain't it an inderscribable feeling when you're just one step away from something you really want? It's of no importance what that is, it may be from a slice of pizza to your favorite person in the whole world. Being just one step away from it and knowing you're gonna get it in a while, can sometimes be even more breathtaking than actually getting it.

This awe-inspiring tune catches exactly the feeling -and it's just one step away from its release!
Check out the whole E.P. here. And you'll feel one step away from heaven.

Hauntin' tune

Past few days I’m desperately lookin’ for some free time to relax and feel like human again. This one helps a great deal.

First release (offered with a free download) by the Russian musician and producer Hot Sand (whom we've seen before) for Hator Records. Hot Sand made an inspired remix on Furns - Haunt me (which also does a good job on relaxin' my brain and boost my endorphins).

Startin' to smell like summer in here...

Outer space mix

I don't know what the hell is going on here, but this Diabolical Synthetic Fantasia is utterly, purely, entirely and completely brilliant! And I don't use exclamation marks that often.

Coming from the UK duo Psychemagik, this is a what-the-fuck-just-happened, totally spacey, psyched out mix, which I was on the verge of passing up the first few seconds, but gave me a couple of heart attacks on the row later on. In this soundcloud you'll find only sound clips of the tracks used in the mix and be prepared at around 6:20 onwards to lose your senses for about a minute.

Dreamin' Sunday

Perfect, lovin' tune for a sunny Sunday full of spring.

Al Mac and Zulema formed Zalmac in the '80s and released one lp and two singles. Zulema, also known as a backing vocal singer with Aretha Franklin and a member of Faith Hope and Charity, is no longer with us as of this September. So it's one of those times you feel grateful for the music she left behind for us.

Dude's track

If I were a dude I'd definitely make good use of this tune to get the chick I'd have my eyes on -and probably fail dramatically with this sound in 2014.

But since I ain't, I'll still make good use of this awesome rare track by relaxing and enjoyin' it, the few hours I have free these days.

Vinyl-lover tune

Well, there's another tune I've never heard before and for once again I was introduced to it by Vinyl Addicted through his soundcloud page.

Vinyl Addicted is one of the favorite guests in this blog (see here), a true lover of vinyl and disco, funk, house music (you'll find everything in his blog) who regularly edits and shares true rarities. One of his last projects was this very tune from his collection, that can't be found easily on web record stores. His remastered work with extra loops and beatline can be found here and you can download it for free in his fb page.

Thank you once again, mate!

Still a man's world

One of the greatest songs ever written, sung and performed is being a little bit -actually a lot- reformed so as to fit into the house music norms.

This is the Sound Diggers' take on James Brown's "It's a man's man's man's world". I admit it won't make me forget the original version -I believe nothing ever will and I don't think anyone will attempt that- but it's a decent job, able to bring this tune into the dancefloors for those can't dance to the blues.

Dumb, dumber and the dumbest

Heard this on the radio the other day, as I was daydreaming on a bus.

After I got over the shock that I had totally hidden Stevie Nicks somewhere in my long-term memory for years, the radio producer started replying to messages sent by his dumber-than-a-box-of-hair audience that it isn't Stevie Nicks who "stole this" from Beyoncé, but the other way round. This having to be clarified caused an instant and perpetual facepalm situation, till I got off the bus.

I don't live in the Beyoncé-Lady Gaga world, so I had to check out which Beyoncé track they were talking about and it was Bootylicious by Destiny's Child (as you can see, Destiny's Child is all about Beyoncé for these douchebags) and they were talking about the guitar riff that appears throughout the song.

Although it's comforting that dummies of this kind could actually isolate this riff from the whole song (for some reason I believe that those who don't have a special relationship with music, they listen to a song as a whole and can't tell one sound from another) and pair it with a song they've heard before, it's frustrating to hear that some people listened to the "Edge of seventeen" and the sound of this song made them believe that it's a track that came after Beyoncé and could actually be inspired by her music.

I mean come on, people. Really?

Unforgettable revival

There's an amazing thing goin' on with today's track. It combines a doo-wop feeling of the '50s, with contemporary hip-hop beats and some french touch with high-pitched vocals. And the best part? It doesn't sound weird. At all.

Racyne here, sampled Nat King Cole's Unforgettable and seems that can make today's youngsters move with a little bit of undercover '50s feeling.

Check out Racyne's page with sounds from nu-disco to deep house and hip-hop and see for yourself.

Merci beaucoup, Racyne!

There it is and it feels so good

Remember Shalamar? Ezlv remembered them too and made a fresh tune out of one of their popular tracks, "There it is". A tune that makes you feel grateful that people are so different and can have such diverse views on a piece of music, that can bring an old, forgotten track back into your reality, so freshened-up that you can smell it.

Surely the original tune established a strong base to build upon, but still the outcome feels like you're rolling in fresh grass, just like when you were 8.

*Don't neglect checking out these two dudes (Ezekiel and Louis Vee known as Ezlv) from Canada. And while you're at it, take a look at their profile description -it's the best one I've ever seen. Hilarious!

Love&soul

Year after year things get harder and harder. After a whole lotta smiles that turned into laughters, disappointments that turned into creativity (or in tears -I'm only human), beginnings, endings, dances, anxieties, fights, hugs, struggling, winning and losing, this gal had a cozy birthday yesterday. And I have to say that only one thing remains the solid truth in my mind and my life: sharing our love is so much better than not sharing it at all.

Emmett Garner Jr. couldn't have put it better.

*Donny Hathaway also "hides" behind this. Remember him?

Duff Disco world

First time I listened to Duff Disco ever was in a disco party in a bar in Athens, where Greg Wilson was the guest dj. What I can’t seem to remember is whether the Duff Disco track, that brought me into the Duff Disco world that night, was played by Wilson or the warm-up dj (who I can't remeber either). But I believe that is of no importance.

The track was one of those tunes that leave you standing there enjoyin' them, while you're tryin' to pinpoint the sample which you're absolutely certain you'll be able to dig outta your long-term memory if everybody and everything paused for just one sec. It was the "Return of the Duff" and -thank goodness- I almost instantly (had a little stroke first) recognized the sample from the "Return of the Mack", which I deeply loved back in school when it was released. When I got back home (or the other day probably) I googled edits on it and found the specific edit and the producer. From then on –that was about 4 or 5 years ago, which now that I think of it means that I should be concerned that I don’t remember things clearly today- I always check out this talented producer.

So I thought I’d share with you a list of tracks that Duff Disco shares with everybody who loves his music and want to download it either for free or donating whatever they want to support him and his music. Check them out people and if you have the ability to spare a few pounds on decent music, do it.

Bye Frankie

This is what Frankie was doin' in 1987, inspired by Billy Paul, when we were kids and still hooked on Muppet Show and Smurfs.

Satoshie Tomiie, Robert Owens and of course Frankie Knuckles made "Tears" happen. I can still feel like a teenager when I listen to the Full Intention mix.

Frankie Knuckles playin' "The light" causin' delirium to the crowd. I'm so thankful I lived this kind of moment too, one of the three times I had the honor of enjoyin' his tunes live.

So long, Mr. Knuckles. Thank you for your music.
I still hope this is a very bad April Fools' joke.

You know how hooked on bass I am, right? If the answer is yes, you'll probably have a vague idea of what's going on in here right now with this gem.

Car-CD freak

The thing that got me excited the most when I passed the exams for the driver's license in my 18 years of age was that I would be able to listen to some decent music loud, without caring about the volume, the neighbours complaining, my brother or sister studying or my parents wanting to rest. The family car had new speakers at that time -my brother would always take care of these kinda stuff- so getting the freaking license in my hands meant primarily that I would be able to drive around listening to some damn music in peace and secondarily that I would see less and less the inside of a bus from then on. So I started burning CDs for my driving pleasure. Lots of CDs. So many that the glovebox would lean from their weight and all the storage spaces around would be filled day by day with nothing else but CDs. Up to this day, I have six or seven cases of CDs, with each one holding about 20 of them. And all these CDs are filled with mp3 files, so we're talking about approximately 14,000 tracks on my wheels. Why am I telling you all these? Cause today I wanted to listen to this, and I couldn't find it.

This is one of my old skool favorites, which I always remember in the first days of spring, cause it's one of those tracks that could define this sunny, full of ear-to-ear smiles, upbeat season. For me at least.

Spring and butterflies aside, I still have to get rid of some car CDs. The more you have in you car, the more likely you are to get bored to search them through and you get stuck with your recently burnt ones. Don't do the same mistake, people. Save yourselves.
