The Breakbot experience

Since I managed to survive the previous stroke and attend yesterday's party without a heart attack, I might as well tell you a few things about my Breakbot experience.

I 'll be honest: there have been Breakbot sets that have absolutely blown my mind in their full duration, track by track. Yesterday, in The Kids are Alright party, I can say that I got the chills with 3-4 tracks that have never heard before, had minor strokes with 1 or 2 awesome unknown tunes (and the fact that they still remain unknown doesn't help my condition), danced a lot, came face to face with Breakbot -and without realizing it I think I froze and goggled-, but in the end I didn't totally get that "mind blowing" feeling.

I think it's because Breakbot's set was just 1 hour and a half -or a bit longer- and during that time he had to warm up, harsh it up, disco it down, bring back the old skool, play a few hits and close down. Too many things to do, too little time. But to tell you the truth, I don't care. Mind-blowing or not, I had a great time. Breakbot can do that to you, even with the worst one of his sets. And this man's talent of incorporating producing skills into a dj set is just beyond me.

Highlights: The I'm glad that you're here track, Breakbot's intro track (see video below), Michael Jackson's Thriller track with people from the crowd dancing on stage -they should have danced like zombies though, that would be fun- and the whole nostalgic '90s part of the set with Snap, Robin S and stuff.

 (This is the Thriller track I mentioned, but that's it, sorry. No more videos. I prefer spending the night dancing than recording...)

After Breakbot, Busy P took over. He started off well with a really dirty edit on Imagination's Illusion and a bit of disco mood, but then things got too harsh for my ears, so I didn't stick around much longer. After all, I'm like 100 and if the music can't speak to me, I get tired and hungry.

Breakbot's take on Breakbot

On grounds of music company I must say that Breakbot is my best friend and I love it when he "brings" Ruckazoid along. This summer I took both of them with me to the Greek islands, as the "You should know" EP released in July, rightfully won a place in my playlist.



I love the voluminous figure of Thibaut Berland on the sketch - looks like the bullyboy at school who stares at your sandwich so hard, making you leave it aside for him with no second thought -, I felt kinda nostalgic with the Swiss remix - had a bit oldskool aroma, don't you think? - I turned goggle-eyed with the low-pitched vocals in Le Family Club remix, but what I adored the most was the alternate take. Breakbot's take on his own track. Well, if Breakbot can't touch Breakbot with the best possible results, then who can?

Length matters

No way. No fucking way this is one minute long. That's what I thought the first time I heard the Easy Fraction track from Breakbot's "By your side", while I was about to wear off the repeat button. To be honest, I still think so. It ends before you even end the phrase "Wow this track is so awesome that I could just run naked in the town's center wrapped in Breakbot's album cover just to prove how awesome this track is". It's so short that it ends as you run towards the volume button to raise it. It's fucking short. Period.

And it's such an amazing track, sampling "Friendly persuasion" by Gladys Knight and the Pips, that I just can't quite get how this couldn't be at least five minutes long. The good thing is that apparently two other people (Yaaman and Diyqee)  thought so too and decided to give us their version. Their longer version. And the best part? They both offer a free download - check out their soundclouds, they both have sets and tracks that might get you off. 





Well, now we can run naked in the town's center after all.

The A.B. era

For me there's a B.B. and an A.B. era. The B.B. would be the Before Breakbot period in time, when if anyone would tell me "check out this set, half hour - 30 tracks", I would kindly excuse myself and start running to save me and my ears from a -without much doubt- lousy megamix.

The A.B. era began when I carefully listened to the Breakbot Sunday Selecta set on a Sunday morning - yeah, ironic, I know. Breakbot (Thibaud Berland) has so skillfully mixed 33 tracks in 33 minutes, that if I could describe the set with 3 words, they would be flow, flow and flow.

It's not only the mixing, of course, since Breakbot has given his magic touch to most of the tracks, but in general we have to admit it: this dude is wicked. Thank God (that is whoever put the tracklist together) the tracklist was right there, but don't expect to find the exact and whole original versions in the set - the tracks are "breakbotted".
